Holy Spirit #14 Questions for CG and Devotionals

His Presence and Power

This last Sunday we closed out our last message series on the Holy Spirit series.

As we said goodbye to the series we summarized what we've learned by looking at the two main categories of the Spirit’s reality in our lives:  His presence and His power.  And we considered the "means” by which God’s Spirit fills our hearts with His presence and power.

Review:

We experience The Spirit's presence and power as we…

  • Re-trust the Gospel (Galatians 3:1-7).

There is nothing more important than the Gospel if we are to have a vibrant relationship with the Holy Spirt.  Continuing to hold onto the truth that we are justified and forgiven by God through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ alone - and not by our performance or obedience - is fundamental to maintaining the health of our relationship with the Spirit.

  • Trust in the word (Jeremiah 15:16)

“The word of God gives expression to the voice of the Spirit”.  As we seek to understand, and put our hope in, the very words of God, we give the Holy Spirit more “material” to work with as it were.  His power and truth flow into and through our hearts and minds as we treasure and put our trust in God’s very words.  As we trust the promises and warnings and instruction of the Bible, God’s voice in the written word comes to us not merely with understanding, but with strength from above to hear and follow.

  • Follow His lead (Rom 8:10-12; Gal 5:16-7)

As we trust in the Gospel and put our hope in God’s word, the Holy Spirit puts new desires and affections in us and works in our hearts to lead us into godliness.  We nourish our experience of Him as we yield to His leading in our lives and submit to godly desires He places in us. As we do this, He bears His fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, goodness, kindness, faithfulness, and self-control in and through us.

  • We seek and use His gifts (1 Tim 4:14, 1 Cor 12)

God gave us gifts to use and not neglect.  We have a part to play in the body that is unique and needed.  We also have a need for the gifts of others.   Here is a helpful article to that help might you in discerning how God has gifted you.

  • We prepare and share the Gospel (1 Peter 3:15; Matt 28:18-20)

The Spirit was given not only for our own relationship with Jesus, but for those now under God’s judgment; that they might come know God’s saving love and Fatherhood.   He was therefore given to empower God’s church to be a witness for Jesus to the world.  Because He is the Spirit of the One who came to save and seek the lost, it is impossible for the Holy Spirit to be working all of His will in us without drawing us to be concerned for the souls of those without any hope.  As you prepare yourself to be ready to testify to Jesus as Lord of all, the Holy Spirit will give you strength – as you depend on Him – and opportunity as He ordains.   As you step out in trusting Him to meet you, He will empower you to open your mouth so that others might turn from death to life.

Application:

Prayerfully review this list and ask the Lord:

  • Where have you seen Him strengthen you in your relationship with Him through the Holy Spirit?  Which of these “means” has He used?  Which are you most used to Him meeting you through?

  • Where do you think you most need to grow in nourishing your relationship with the Holy Spirit? Which of these means is most difficult or neglected by you?

  • Spend time in prayer thanking God for the means of grace He gives that we might walk in fellowship with His Spirit.   Ask Him for refreshing grace to help you give yourself to pursuing His Spirit’s presence and power.

That's all for now folks.  Until next time.

May the Lord bless you!
